Paste or type a list of numbers to get the mean, median, mode, range, sum and count, plus a weighted average option for grades and scores.
Mean, median and mode
- Mean (the usual "average"): add all the numbers and divide by how many there are.
- Median: the middle value when the numbers are sorted. With an even count, it is the average of the two middle values.
- Mode: the value that appears most often. A list can have more than one mode, or none.
Mean = sum of values ÷ number of values
Worked example
For the test scores 72, 85, 90, 66 and 88:
- Sum: 401, so the mean is 401 ÷ 5 = 80.2
- Sorted: 66, 72, 85, 88, 90, so the median is 85
- Range: 90 − 66 = 24
Mean or median?
The median is less affected by extreme values. If one value is very large, such as a single high income in a group, the mean is pulled up while the median stays representative. That is why reports often use median household income.
Weighted averages
When some values count more than others, such as a final exam worth 50% of a grade, multiply each value by its weight, add them up and divide by the total of the weights.
Frequently asked questions
What is standard deviation?
It measures how spread out the numbers are around the mean. A small value means the numbers are close together. The calculator shows the population standard deviation.
Can I paste a column from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Numbers separated by new lines, spaces or commas all work.
