Convert fractions and mixed numbers to decimals and percentages, or turn a decimal back into a simplified fraction. Fractions are reduced to lowest terms automatically.
How to convert a fraction to a decimal
Divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number):
Decimal = numerator ÷ denominator
Percentage = decimal × 100
For a mixed number such as 2 3/4, convert it to an improper fraction first: (2 × 4 + 3)/4 = 11/4 = 2.75.
How to convert a decimal to a fraction
- Write the decimal over a power of 10 with as many zeros as there are decimal places: 0.625 = 625/1000.
- Divide top and bottom by their greatest common divisor (125): 625/1000 = 5/8.
Common fractions and decimals
| Fraction | Decimal | Percent |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8 | 0.125 | 12.5% |
| 1/4 | 0.25 | 25% |
| 1/3 | 0.333… | 33.3% |
| 3/8 | 0.375 | 37.5% |
| 1/2 | 0.5 | 50% |
| 2/3 | 0.666… | 66.7% |
| 3/4 | 0.75 | 75% |
Terminating or repeating?
A simplified fraction gives a terminating decimal only if its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. So 3/8 = 0.375 ends, while 1/3 = 0.333… repeats forever.
Frequently asked questions
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. The calculator does this automatically.
Can I convert repeating decimals like 0.333?
Typed decimals are treated as exact, so 0.333 becomes 333/1000. For 1/3, use fraction mode instead.
