Generate strong, random passwords or passphrases in your browser using secure randomness. Nothing is sent to or stored on our servers.
What makes a password strong?
- Length: the single most important factor. Each extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords.
- Randomness: passwords chosen by people follow patterns that attackers know. Randomly generated passwords do not.
- Uniqueness: use a different password for every account, so one leak does not unlock everything.
How this generator works
Passwords are created entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), a cryptographically secure source of randomness. Nothing you generate is sent to or stored by UtilityShift. Each password includes at least one character from every set you select.
Password or passphrase?
- A 16-character random password with letters, numbers and symbols has about 100 bits of entropy, which is extremely hard to guess.
- A passphrase of five random words (such as maple-orbit-tiger-velvet-canyon-42) is easier to type and remember, and still strong when the words are chosen randomly.
What do "bits of entropy" mean?
Entropy measures how many guesses an attacker would need. Every extra bit doubles the work. Around 70 bits or more is considered strong for most online accounts; 100 or more is excellent.
Password safety tips
- Use a reputable password manager to store unique passwords.
- Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it is offered.
- Never reuse your email password anywhere else.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to generate a password on a website?
This tool never transmits the password; it exists only in your browser tab. For maximum caution, you can generate one and then refresh the page.
Should I change passwords regularly?
Current guidance from NIST suggests changing passwords when there is evidence of a breach, rather than on a fixed schedule, and focusing on length and uniqueness.
