Calculate the tip and total for a restaurant bill or service, and split it evenly between any number of people, with optional rounding up.
How to calculate a tip
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
Total = bill + tip
Per person = total ÷ number of people
Worked example
A $86.40 dinner bill with an 18% tip: the tip is $15.55 and the total is $101.95. Split between 4 people, each pays about $25.49. Rounding up to the nearest dollar makes it $26 each, a total of $104 and an effective tip of about 20%.
How much to tip in the U.S.
| Service | Common tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 15% to 20%, more for excellent service |
| Bar | $1 to $2 per drink, or 15% to 20% of the tab |
| Food delivery | 10% to 20%, with a few dollars minimum |
| Taxi or rideshare | 10% to 20% |
| Hair salon or barber | 15% to 20% |
| Hotel housekeeping | $2 to $5 per night |
Tipping customs vary by country. In many places, a service charge is already included in the bill.
Tip quick math
- 10%: move the decimal one place left ($86.40 → $8.64).
- 20%: double 10% ($17.28).
- 15%: 10% plus half of it ($8.64 + $4.32 = $12.96).
