Convert an hourly wage into weekly, biweekly, monthly and annual pay, including overtime hours and unpaid time off.
How to convert hourly pay to salary
Annual pay = Hourly wage × hours per week × paid weeks per year
A full-time year is usually 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). A quick shortcut: for full-time work, double the hourly wage and add three zeros. $25 an hour is roughly $50,000 a year (the exact figure is $52,000).
Worked example
At $25 an hour for 40 hours a week:
| Period | Gross pay |
|---|---|
| Year (52 weeks) | $52,000 |
| Month | $4,333.33 |
| Two weeks | $2,000 |
| Week | $1,000 |
If two weeks of the year are unpaid, the annual total falls to $50,000.
Overtime
Under U.S. federal law, most hourly employees must receive at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Five overtime hours a week at $25 adds $187.50 a week, or $9,750 a year. For a detailed weekly breakdown, use the overtime calculator.
Gross versus take-home pay
These figures are before taxes and deductions. Federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare and benefits all reduce take-home pay, often by 20% to 30% in total depending on your situation.
Frequently asked questions
How many paid hours are in a year?
2,080 for a standard 40-hour week. Paid holidays and vacation are still paid hours, so they are included.
Is a salaried job better than hourly?
Not automatically. Salaried roles often do not pay overtime, so compare the effective hourly rate with the salary to hourly calculator.
