Salary to Hourly Calculator

Convert an annual salary into an hourly rate, and see your real hourly pay once paid holidays, vacation and extra hours are taken into account.

How to convert salary to hourly

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (hours per week × 52)

For a standard 40-hour week, divide by 2,080. A quick shortcut: halve the salary and drop the last three digits. $65,000 a year is roughly $32.50 an hour (exactly $31.25).

Your effective hourly rate

The standard formula assumes you are paid for every one of those 2,080 hours, including holidays and vacation. The effective rate shows what you earn per hour you actually work:

  • Paid time off raises it, because you are paid for hours you do not work.
  • Unpaid extra hours, common in salaried jobs, lower it.

Worked example

A $65,000 salary at 40 hours a week is $31.25 an hour. With 25 paid days off (200 hours), you actually work 1,880 hours, so the effective rate is about $34.57 per hour worked. If you regularly work 45 hours a week, the effective rate drops to about $30.73.

Why it matters

  • Comparing a salaried offer with an hourly one.
  • Deciding whether overtime or a side job is worth it.
  • Seeing what a purchase costs in hours of work.

Frequently asked questions

Before tax. Your take-home hourly pay will be lower after taxes and deductions.

Should I count benefits?

Benefits such as health insurance and retirement matches have real value. Add their yearly value to the salary to compare total compensation.
