Overtime Calculator

Calculate overtime pay and total weekly earnings from your hourly rate, regular hours and overtime hours, including time-and-a-half and double time.

How overtime pay is calculated

Overtime rate = regular rate × multiplier
Overtime pay = overtime hours × overtime rate
Total pay = regular pay + overtime pay

Worked example

At $20 an hour, working 46 hours in a week (40 regular + 6 overtime at 1.5×):

  • Regular pay: 40 × $20 = $800
  • Overtime rate: $20 × 1.5 = $30 an hour
  • Overtime pay: 6 × $30 = $180
  • Total: $980

Overtime rules in the U.S.

  • The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek for non-exempt employees.
  • Many salaried "exempt" employees are not entitled to overtime if they meet salary and duties tests.
  • Some states add daily overtime (for example, over 8 hours in a day) or double time.

Check the U.S. Department of Labor and your state labor department for the rules that apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

Is overtime taxed more?

Overtime is taxed as regular income. A larger paycheck may have more withheld, but your actual tax rate depends on your total yearly income.

Do paid holidays count toward the 40 hours?

Under federal law, hours not actually worked (holidays, vacation, sick time) usually do not count toward overtime, although some employers include them.
