The week totals 39.25 hours (39 h 15 m). At $22 an hour, gross pay is $863.50. No overtime applies because the total is under 40 hours.

How overtime works

Under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also require daily overtime. Adjust the threshold and multiplier to match your rules.

Frequently asked questions

Why should I use decimal hours?

Payroll systems multiply decimal hours by your rate. 39 hours 15 minutes is 39.25 hours, not 39.15.

Can I enter an overnight shift?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is counted across midnight.
